“Making Spaces” (2022) explores the complex intersections of interconnected and interdependent social categorizations such as nation, ethnicity, gender, class, language, sexuality, race, disability, religion, education, and culture in Iraqi Kurdistan through the consideration of the spatial composition in which art is created and in which artists work. It will focus on reexamining the mediums through which Kurdish national stories are transmitted and those “other” modalities and spaces where marginalized narratives may be found, and how the occupation of a space can allow for strategic constructions of meaning within that space and those that allow for contestation of institutionalized inequalities, ideologies, behavioral scripts.

“Making Faces” (2018), is an interdisciplinary journal issue that broadly examines contemporary Kurdish art forms and visual culture in Iraqi Kurdistan. Placing the practices of Kurdish artists and cultural producers working in Iraqi Kurdistan under our focus, this special issue investigates the ways in which artists and activists, journalists and politicians, teachers and students, displaced peoples and citizens, are coming together to make art and produce visual events in a way that reflects and confronts the hard questions of a society in a period of rapid social, economic and political transformation. The essays making up this special issue are situated around and negotiate multiple intersections of interconnected and interdependent social categorizations such as nation, ethnicity, gender, class, language, sexuality, education and culture.
